The first efforts of DakshiniPrayash was directed at imparting the basics of education to unschooled children of Madurdaha in a belief that only learning could open the doors of a better and more fulfilling life ahead. The chrysalis of the experiment that began under the shade of roadside trees imparting the basics to a few plucky children and their hesitant parents has now been transformed into a lively school that provides an atmosphere of holistic education to more than 350 eager students.
Currently the school caters to children right from the playschool stage up to Class VII with plans for further extension under active consideration. The school has two buildings of its own, with about 12 classrooms and an area for recreation, dining and for the staff. It also has its own small playground.Special tutorial classes conducted for candidates appearing for their school finals as well as higher secondary examinations have been of great assistance in improving the performance in the examinations.
In keeping with Swami Vivekananda's philosophy that the broadening of the mind is possible only when the stomach is sated,DakshiniPrayash has embarked on its mission by providing wholesome and free midday meals and healthcare services. To further incentivise the literacy programme, the children are also provided with free uniforms and study materials. Sharing of meals by the teaching and supervisory staff further enhances the bonding and promotes a homely and caring atmosphere that is conducive to self-motivated learning.
"We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one's own feet." - Swami Vivekananda
Since technology and the competitive real-life environment are both no respecters of economic and societal constraints, the children are provided facilities that enable them to become computer-literate and encouraged to expose their talents by freely participating in various forums that normally see the involvement of children from higher social and economic strata. The performance of the students of DakshiniPrayash has been extremely commendable with many laurels won in stiff competition.
The school is organized on secular principles and students encouraged to participate in prominent national events such as Independence Day, Republic Day as well as to pay their respects to the Goddess of Learning, Saraswati. The annual sports and cultural show is an eagerly anticipated event with the students vying to outdo each other in physical or artistic prowess.
The absolute growth and development of a nation is not possible as long as there is disparity between the literate and illiterate. Bridging the gap between the educated and the unschooled is one of the objectives of adult education services of DakshiniPrayash. At DakshiniPrayash, the unlettered adults of the local communities are encouraged to participate in special classes to usher in the plentiful benefits of education into their lives.Adult education enables recipients to become more aware of worldly matters and enhance both their earning potential and stature in society.
